The Short and UnSweet Challenge is a 14-day journey designed to encourage participants to cut down on added sugars by eliminating or replacing habitual foods and beverages that are high in excess sugar and largely devoid of nutritional value.
- Duration of Challenge: 2 phases/2 weeks
- Participation Type: Individual and Group
- Recommended Time of Year: Any time, but best after holiday seasons associated with increased sugar intake
- Program Completion Type: Minimum tokens, 500
- Activity Allowed: Current and all previous phases
Purpose/Benefits of the Sugar Challenge
Over the course of two weeks, participants will strive to avoid or swap foods containing added sugars for five non-consecutive days. This initiative not only aids in understanding the impact of sugar on health but also fosters mindful eating habits.
Outline of the Challenge Phases
Phase 1 (Days 1-7): Awareness and Education
Theme: This phase examines some of the harmful effects of excessive sugar intake. In this phase, participants will also begin practicing mindfulness related to high-sugar eating habits.
Phase Completion Type: All Required Activities

- Use the Healthy Alternative Tracker: Log the instances when added sugars are avoided or replaced with a healthier alternative at least 3 times this week. (70 tokens)
- Read the article “The Impact of Sugar on Our Health.” (100 tokens)
- Read the article “How Much Added Sugar is Okay and How to Spot it on Food Labels.” (100 tokens)
Phase 2 (Days 8-14): Implementation and Habit Formation
Theme: This phase identifies how to spot hidden sugars in common foods and explores healthier options to replace high-sugar foods and drinks with.
Phase Completion Type: All Required Activities
Required
- Use the Healthy Alternative Tracker: Log the instances when added sugars are avoided or replaced with a healthier alternative at least 3 times this week. (70 tokens)
- Read the article “The Hidden Sugars in Our Diet.” (100 tokens)
